Emergency lighting in Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas must hold IECEx and/or ATEX certification under the IEC 60079 series, in addition to meeting the relevant emergency lighting performance standard (IEC 60598-2-22 for maintained and non-maintained emergency luminaires). In the GCC, ADNOC and Saudi Aramco engineering standards specify both the explosion protection certification and the emergency lighting performance requirements. GCC oil and gas operator standards and IEC 60598-2-22 typically require a minimum 3-hour battery backup duration for emergency escape route lighting and emergency exit lighting in hazardous areas. Some safety-critical installations require longer durations. Yes. Modern explosion proof emergency luminaires include automatic self-test functions that periodically test the battery and lamp circuit and report faults. This eliminates the need for manual testing in hazardous areas, which is a significant operational benefit for refinery and offshore platform operators. IEC 60598-2-22 and ADNOC engineering standards require a minimum of 1 lux at floor level along escape route centrelines in emergency mode, with some operator standards requiring higher levels for industrial escape routes. Emergency exit signs must achieve sufficient luminance to be visible from the required viewing distance.
