ATEX Certification for Explosion Proof Lighting

ATEX is the European regulatory framework governing equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. AJV Tech supplies a full range of ATEX certified explosion proof lighting and ventilation products from leading European manufacturers including Raytec, Atexor, and Ramfan. ATEX certification is widely recognised and often specified by international EPC contractors and operators working across the Middle East and India.

What is ATEX?

ATEX derives its name from the French 'Atmospheres Explosibles' and refers to two European directives: the ATEX Equipment Directive 2014/34/EU (covering equipment) and the ATEX Workplace Directive 1999/92/EC (covering worker safety). The Equipment Directive requires that all equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres within the EU must be designed, manufactured, and tested to meet essential health and safety requirements. ATEX certification is carried out by EU Notified Bodies who assess the equipment against harmonised European standards (EN 60079 series for gas, EN 60079-31 and EN 61241 for dust). Products that meet these requirements carry the CE marking along with the Ex hexagonal marking.

ATEX Zones Explained

The ATEX framework classifies hazardous areas into zones based on the frequency and duration of the presence of an explosive atmosphere. For gas and vapour environments: Zone 0 is where an explosive atmosphere is continuously present or present for long periods; Zone 1 is where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation; Zone 2 is where an explosive atmosphere is not likely in normal operation but may occur briefly. For combustible dust environments: Zone 20 has a continuous or frequent presence of explosive dust clouds; Zone 21 is where explosive dust clouds are likely in normal operation; Zone 22 is where explosive dust clouds are unlikely but may occur briefly. AJV Tech products cover Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21, and Zone 22 requirements.

ATEX Equipment Categories

ATEX classifies equipment into categories that correspond to the level of protection provided. Category 1 equipment offers a very high level of protection and is suitable for Zone 0 or Zone 20. Category 2 equipment provides a high level of protection and is intended for Zone 1 or Zone 21. Category 3 equipment provides a normal level of protection suitable for Zone 2 or Zone 22. Equipment is further divided into Group I (mining) and Group II (surface industries including oil and gas, chemical, and petrochemical). AJV Tech supplies Category 2 and Category 3 Group II equipment, covering the most common hazardous area classifications found in oil and gas, refinery, and petrochemical facilities.
