The distinctive identifying feature of an offshore oil rig is the platform. The massive steel or concrete structure used for exploration and extraction of oil and gas from the crust of the earth is the offshore platform. They can be installed in the open sea, gulf and even in lakes. But they are always installed many kilometres from the shorelines – hence the name ‘offshore’.

Offshore structures are used for performing various functions in a variety of environments and water depths. They are used for oil exploration and production, ship loading and unloading, navigation and to support causeways and bridges.

Since offshore platforms are always located away from the mainland, lighting plays a crucial role to ensure continuity of operations during the night as well as help workers carry about their daily life in these structures. A variety of lighting fixtures are used for various purposes; one of the most distinctive among them is a ‘Crane Light’.

What is a crane light?

Cranes are an integral part of an offshore platform. They are elevating and rotating lifting devices which are mounted on a pedestal. They are used to transfer personnel and materials to or from marine vessels, structures and barges.

Crane lights are lighting structures fixed to these cranes which provide illumination to a large area. These lights assist crane operators in their day-to-day operations. Crane lights are fitted with a crane light driver which provides power to crane lights. One crane light drive can power multiple lights of lower wattage at once or supply electricity to one crane light with a higher wattage. They are mounted to a flat surface using mounting holes or a fabricated bracket.

Most facilities prefer using LED lighting since they are more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. They require less maintenance than traditional lighting and are highly durable in harsh and hazardous conditions.

Since offshore facilities are by default considered a hazardous environment, all crane lights used on an offshore platform have to be explosion proof in nature.
