Borealis petrochemical plant — Atexor SLAM FIXED LED lighting

Atexor Oy supplied ATEX certified SLAM FIXED® 1LED and 2LED luminaires for Borealis Polymers Oy — one of Europe's leading petrochemical producers — at their Kilpilahti production plants in Porvoo, Finland. The project improved lighting quality and energy efficiency across Ex-classified hazardous areas while meeting the strict ATEX safety requirements of petrochemical production. Borealis had already trusted Atexor's MICA® handheld inspection lamps in these same plants for 20 years prior to the fixed lighting installation.

About Borealis and the Kilpilahti Plants

Borealis is a leading global provider of innovative solutions in polyolefins, base chemicals, and fertilizers. Their production plants in Kilpilahti, Porvoo employ approximately 900 people and produce polyethylene and polypropylene plastics for use in piping and cabling products, steel pipe covering, and packaging. The Porvoo site also hosts an active innovation centre focused on catalyst and process research and development.

As a petrochemical production environment, the Kilpilahti plants include areas with extremely strict occupational safety requirements due to the presence of potentially explosive gas mixtures and harsh weather conditions — including the subzero temperatures and wind typical of Nordic winters.

The Project: ATEX Lighting for a New Underground Gas Storage Facility

The immediate scope was the above-ground pumping station of a new underground gas storage facility at the Kilpilahti site — comprehensively lit with new Atexor SLAM FIXED® 1LED and 2LED luminaires. The installation also marked the beginning of a broader lighting renewal programme for the Borealis production plant, with the longer-term plan to replace legacy luminaires across the site with modern ATEX certified LED fittings — delivering improvements in safety, service costs, and environmental impact.

Why Borealis Chose Atexor

  • Long LED service life — a critical advantage in EX-hazardous areas where maintenance of electrical equipment always requires special arrangements
  • Low life cycle costs driven by high LED efficiency and minimal maintenance requirements
  • Reliable and extremely fast delivery of Ex certified luminaires
  • Over 35 years of experience in lighting solutions for explosion hazardous areas
  • Atexor MICA® hand lamps already in use at the Kilpilahti plants for 20 years — an established trust relationship
  • Proven experience at similar petrochemical and industrial plants across the region
  • Willingness and capability to develop custom factory-fitted solutions to meet Borealis-specific requirements

The Solution: SLAM FIXED® 1LED & 2LED Luminaires

Two luminaire configurations were deployed across the Borealis facility:

SLAM FIXED® MZ2268

Single LED unit with pole fitting — for process area and pumping station installations requiring column or pole mounting.

SLAM FIXED® MZ2271

Dual LED units with wall/ceiling fitting — for covered areas and understructure mounting within the petrochemical plant.

Atexor worked closely with Borealis to customise the installation — pre-fitting luminaires at the factory with special cables chosen by Borealis, and designing bespoke mounting solutions to simplify installation in the specific operating environment of the plant.

A 20-Year Relationship: Atexor MICA® Hand Lamps at Borealis

Before specifying the SLAM FIXED® fixed luminaires, Borealis had already relied on Atexor's MICA® portable inspection hand lamps for temporary lighting during maintenance and inspection work at the Kilpilahti plants for over 20 years. This existing track record of safe, reliable performance in the same hazardous area environment was a key factor in the confidence Borealis placed in Atexor for the fixed lighting project.

The MICA® series — Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2 rated, IIC gas group certified rechargeable LED inspection lamps — is part of the Atexor range supplied by AJV Tech across the GCC and India.

“We were extremely pleased with Atexor's working methods. They genuinely listened to the special needs of our demanding conditions and we were able to work together to build a lighting solution that suits us best. The philosophy of Atexor works.”
